As a publisher of Dharma books, we’re very concerned with making the finest books we can while doing all we can to preserve the environment in the process. So… what does that really mean?
To help you get an idea, let’s take a look at what’s happened with just one printer we’ve been working with as Environmental Mindfulness partners since November of 2004. Since then, we have printed 775,073 copies of our books with them.
Our use of a combination of recycled and FSC certified papers have made a measurable impact. If you’re not familiar with FSC certification, the intent of the FSC system is to shift the market to eliminate habitat destruction, water pollution, displacement of indigenous peoples and violence against people and wildlife that often accompanies logging.
So what are the grand totals?
Well, 630,669 pounds of paper used in the Wisdom EM program saved the following:
2,358 Million BTUs of energy
297,502 lbs of greenhouse gases
1,234,863 gallons of water
158,574 lbs of solid waste material
So you see, Environmental Mindfulness is more than two nice-sounding words put together to create an extra nice-sounding phrase. It works.
We have also chosen to offset 100% of our offices electricity consumption with Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). To learn more about how Wisdom puts Environmental Mindfulness to work for our Dharma-publishing program, visit the About page on WisdomPubs.org.
