Dogen’s Extensive Record is the first-ever complete and scholarly translation of the monumental Eihei Koroku into English. This
edition contains extensive and detailed research and annotation by scholar, translator, and Zen teacher Taigen Dan Leighton, as well as forewords by the eighteenth-century poet-monk Ryokan and Tenshin Reb Anderson, former abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center-plus introductory essays from Dogen scholar Steven Heine, and the prominent American Zen master John Daido Loori.
“A valuable asset not just for students of the Zen teacher Dogen but for all students of Zen and Buddhism in general.”—Buddhadharma

I did break down and buy this. Very happy I did. It’s a lovely hardback, and thick enough that, if thrown with adequate force by an annoyed roshi, would bust open the head of many a Zen pilgrim. The sewn-in bookmark and luxury endpapers are nice touches. And the translated discourses, based on the few I’ve skimmed, go deep rather than long. It’s just Dogen sitting around with what were no doubt his adoring if slightly terrified students, shooting the shit and blowing their little minds open. Plus, an intelligent and helpful introduction and notes.
Looking forward to many years of bemused head scratching.
